A libel case was filed against German immigrant printer John Peter Zenger in 1735 against New York Governor Brigadier-General William Crosby. The governor filed seditious libel against the New York Weekly Journal printer to shut down the newspaper who accused his administration of tyranny and violation of people’s rights. There were two grand juries empaneled but both did not issue indictment to support the accusation of intentional publication (without justification) of written blame on the governor.
