Why did the aztecs engage in human sacrifice?

Since Aztec people were idol worshipers and they believed in some inhumane rituals. Though the Aztecs likely saw human sacrifice as crucial to their survival, yet scholars and historians believe that Aztec human sacrifice was performed in honor of their gods.
