1c: Every year, floods on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers brought silt to the land. The fertile silt make the land good for farming.

2a: This region received little rain. When a lot of rain fell onto the rivers higher up, water levels got very high. Flooding would destroy crops, kill livestock, and wash away homes. When water levels were too low, crops dried up. They developed irrigation.

2b: Because of irrigation, they had a surplus of food (more than enough). Fewer people were needed to farm. People who quit farming began to become crafters, religious leaders, and government workers. They were able to accomplish more.
