Phoenicians expanded their colonies – called city states – along the shores of the Mediterrenean Sea. Their naval and trade power was a consequence of a strategic position sorrounded by important neighbors: greeks, egyptians, berbers, north-african tribes, semitic people and southern europeans (even romans and britains). In addition, they could reach India and Arabia using the red sea. Exepcionally, phoenicians could connect with western Asia using land routes where goods were transported in caravans. It wasn’t only the sea and earth routes which made them a powerful trading force, they also established permanent traiding posts along the whole costline of the Mediterrenean Sea and the Red Sea.
