After WWI, Hitler travelled to Munich, where he became involved with the Nazi Party for the first time. However, in 1923, he decided to stage a coup. He wanted to emulate Mussolini's "March on Rome" of 1922.

Although Hitler gained some support from party members, neither the army, nor the state police joined him. When attempting to overthrow the Bavarian government, police dispersed them.

Hitler was arrested on November 11, 1923 for high treason. On April 1, he was sentenced to five years imprisonment. However, after a year serving, he was pardoned by the Bavarian Supreme Court and released from jail on December 20, 1924.
