What is meant by afterimage?

Afterimage refers to the visual illusion of an image that persist visually to us even after what we were watching has been removed but we can still visualise or see it as if it was still there.

For example let us say you were staring at the moon for a long time but when you look away from it then there is a brief image in which you can still see the moon even after looking away from it this is referred to as afterimage and because the moon and the sun are too bright after staring away you usually see the positive afterimage.

There are two types of afterimage a positive afterimage and negative afterimage .Positive afterimage is when we have stared at the colour of the bright original image and those colours were preserved in the afterimage and negative is when we glanced at the less brighter image the colours we looked at from the original image get reversed on the afterimage for example you watched something that was green but it looks yellow in the afterimage.
