The Great Divide refers to the continental divide of the Americas which is due to the mountain ranges that run north to south through Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Explanation:

The mountains are called the Rocky Mountains in Canada and the United States with the Southern point of the Rockies being the Rio Grande in New Mexico.  The continental divide marks the division of tributaries that flow into the Pacific Ocean from those that flow into the Atlantic. South of the Rio Grande, it passes the western boundary of the Plains of San Agustin. In Mexico, the divide continues through Chihuahua, Jalisco, and the Federal District, down to Puebla, and Chiapas, through Guatemala, southwestern Honduras, western Nicaragua, then western/southwestern Costa Rica, and southern Panama.  The continental divide continues into South America along the Andes mountain range. It is significant because it was a geographical barrier that made it difficult to cross the continent. Even travel to California used to go around the southern tip of Argentina before the advent of the Panama Canal.
