According to the first paragraph who will shrink from the service of his country

According to the first paragraph in Thomas Paine's “American Crisis”, summer soldiers and sunshine patriots will shrink from the service of their country. During the American revolution, soldiers who became part of the Continental Army during spring or summer, but were away or absent without leave (AWOL) in the fall or winter, were called "summer soldiers". On the other hand,  soldiers who supported the patriots when they were winning, but became disloyal and ran away when they were losing, were called “sunshine patriots”. Because of summer soldiers and sunshine patriots, George Washington faced a lot of challenges during the Revolution.

the old way of life was represented by superstition, an angry god, and absolute submission to authority. the thinkers of the age of reason ushered in a new way of thinking. this new way championed the accomplishments of humankind. individuals did not have to accept despair. science and reason could bring happiness and progress. kings did not rule by divine right. they had an obligation to their subjects. europeans pondered the implications for nearly a century. americans put them into practice first.
