James noticed that all of the salamanders disappeared from his flower bed after he planted marigolds. james wanted to study whether marigolds repel salamanders. he tested this by finding 20 flower beds with equal number of salamanders in them. he then planted marigolds in 10 of the beds and left 20 of the beds marigold free. after a month he counted the number of salamanders in each bed. james wanted to make sure there were no differences in the beds other than the presence or absence of marigolds so he made sure each bed had the exact same kind of soil, sunlight exposure, temperature and moisture. if marigolds do repel salamanders, then after a month there should be fewer salamanders in the beds with marigolds than in the beds without marigolds.
