(a) Pragmatism is an educational philosophy that says that education should be about life and growth. Booker T. Washington contributed to the philosophy of pragmatism by creating the Tuskegee Institute, which was founded as a school for Black students to further their education and enhance their lives. (b) Frederick Taylor created the scientific management system which made government more efficient by limiting the power of political machines. He believed that with the use of this system and the scientific method, productivity can be more productive.
(c) American's expected government to play a more active role in solving social problems. Progressives sought to use government to fight poverty and working conditions. For example, muckraker Upton Sinclair published "The Jungle" which exposed the filth of the meat industry. It was up to the government to step in and serve justice to the people.
