Adolescent egocentrism is a phenomenon during which a child of the adolescent period is certain that they are the center of attention and being judges, no matter if that is actually true or not. The adolescent is certain that others are thinking about them as much as they think about themselves. In other words, they are reflecting their own egocentrism and thoughts into the imaginary audience.

It is the theory by David Elkind, developed from Piaget's theory of cognitive stages of children during their development.

In a case in which this occurs is not happening as the adolescent thought process the name for the phenomenon is the spotlight effect. The name refers to the fact that the person thinks they are being "under the spotlight", noticed and judged by others more than they actually are.

This thought process in adults usually accompanies social or general anxiety, projecting own insecurities and worried about self-image in the likes of other people, whether there is any truth behind it or not.
