Read the passage "Sunnyfield Farms" in the box.
SUNNYFIELD FARMS: Five years ago, developers cleared a giant piece of land in order to create a farming community consisting of multi-acre fields and large farmhouses, which they called Sunnyfield Farms. Rules were put into place to keep residents from planting trees that would spoil the view, and grassy lawns were forbidden to keep people from wasting water. Unfortunately, the residents had a hard time getting any crops to grow, and people soon abandoned the community. What may have caused the farms NOT to produce crops?
A erosion of the fertile topsoil, as the developers cleared the land and the lack of trees and grass allowed winds to sweep the soil away
B desertification of the fields, as the ban on grassy lawns, cut down the amount of water absorbed by the land
C degradation of air quality, as the cleared trees no longer provided filtering of the air that crops needed to grow
D overheating of the crops, as the clearing of the trees reduced the amount of shade on the fields
