Why did totalitarian leaders gain power in years following WWI

while democarcy got well established in France , Britain and USA, post WWI, totalitarian leaders sprouted in Germany, Russia, Italy and even in Japan. Some contextual common denominators in all the above Need for economic resurgence - Germany had high inflation, Russia being an agrarian economy lost millions of soldiers.
