It for the first time prohibited discrimination in employment and businesses of public accommodation on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. In most parts of the South, African Americans faced pervasive discrimination in public accommodations and were often forced to sleep in automobiles because they could not rent a hotel room.
