During the Roman Empire . the historic pendulum was on it's high - end and after the Empire fell , the pendulum dropped back into dark times.

During this time , there was more conflict than growth , including tyrants in the hierarchy as well as significant social class differences. The middle ages were also known as the Dark Ages and during this era , mostly plague and downfall persisted.

Furthermore , peasants ( as you could guess) were less sanitary than nobles , spreading the plague at a much more rapid pace. But no one during these times brushed their teeth , so everyone died either way.
