In my neighborhood, people shoot off fireworks in the days before New Years Eve. The first time I hear the fireworks, I am quite sure we are under attack! I jump in response to the loud booms. But, by the third day don't even notice the fireworks when they are set off. Fast forward to the 4th of July, and fireworks are set off in my neighborhood yet again the days before the 4th. According to the general principles of habituation, how am I likely to respond this time?
