Why did Hans feel like he had to lie while living in Nazi Germany?

It was Nazi Germany. If you were not a true Nazi, you were killed. Same if you were Polish or Jewish, or if you helped the Jews. By lying, he could say exactly what Hitler and his troops wanted to hear.
