Lord curzon was appointed as viceroy of India in 1898. He was an able administrator who laid great emphasis on efficiency in administration. But he did not favour any political and social reforms and was an enemy of India nationalism. In those days Bengal was the hud of nationalist activities. The britishers saw it as a threat to the British rule . Lord Curzon divided Bengal into 2 parts in 1905 as east and west Bengal. He gave many reasons or motives behind the partition of Bengal. Reasons behind the partition given by lord curzon was British said that the size of Bengal was to large to be administered by a single provincial government , the population of Bengal was also very large and it was difficult To handle ,it was difficult for a single LT governor of Bengal to administer it effectively so it so it was divided into 2 separate provinces. A new province was created by combining Assam and Chittagong with is districts of old Bengal. Dacca(Dhaka) was the new capital with a majority of the population of Muslim. Through, according to the nationalism the real motive was to reduce the spirit of national enthusiasm and demonstrate the strength of the British administration. The hindu and Muslim of Bengal were very much United both culturally and emotionally. They used to take an active part in the national movement. This spirit of unity and participation in national movement was not liked by Viceroy, Lord Curzon. He wanted to cut at the root of nationalism and by dividing the unity of hindu and Muslim he could achieve that . The only created provinces were divided on the basis of separating the hindu and Muslim. The other British officials who worked on the plan of the partition also supported this intention. And that is how Bengal was divided
