The St Lawrence River Valley is a farmland area that was also rich in fur resources because there was a lot wild game roaming the sorrounding forests. This is the area were the French began to settle, and in fact, in forms the core region of modern day Quebec.

This area was hotly contested by the French and the Native Americans, leading to constant conflict, which were ultimamtely won by the French settlers.
