Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, this document cut ties between America and Great Britain and listed numerous reasons justifying doing so.

Explanation:

The Declaration of Independence was the pronouncement that the founding fathers adopted at the Second Continental Congress meeting.  This meeting took place in Philadelphia and the document was ratified on July 4, 1776.  This is why we continue to celebrate Independence Day on July 4th.  The declaration explained why the Thirteen Colonies were declaring themselves independent from Great Britain.  It lists 27 colonial grievances against King George III. It bears a lot of similarities to other philosophical and political ideas in circulation in this general time period, like the work of John Locke and the Declaration of the Rights of Man that was one product of the French Revolution in 1789.  The Declaration of Independence asserts certain natural and legal rights for citizens, including the right to engage in revolution.
