Explanation:

Oglethorpe was a officer in the army, believed that South Carolina was in danger of being attack by France or Spain. That is why he believed that establishment of new colony would solve this issue. Creation of this "buffer zone" would provide defense for this colony.  Additional problem was of course also the relation with Natives from the region.
