Depending on other countries for food has been a source of concern as it is believed that this has a negative impact on such nations that import food. Some of the reasons for this are:

1. Environmental concern - Thailand is the largest exporter of rice, as countries from different parts of the world import rice from Thailand in order to meet the demands of the people in their countries. If for example, Thailand faces drought or there a case of a heat wave in the country, this will have a negative effect on the production of agricultural produce in the country. Hence, other countries that import rice will be affected as well.

2. Inflation- This simply means when the prices of goods increase. When a country imports it's food from other countries, this will lead to an increase in the price of the food as transportation cost, exchange rate cost and other costs will have been added which invariably leads to higher cost of the food.

3. International relationship - Depending on other countries for food is easier when there's a good international relationship between the countries that are involved. In a case whereby the relationship has been tampered, this may bring about challenges when the country wants to export food.

4. It affects economic growth - A country that wants to develop shouldn't depend on other countries for food as it should be self sufficient in the production of food. Food is a basic need and getting it shouldn't be left in the hands of other countries to decide the fate of the citizens of ones country.
