In many ways, Reconstruction was a failure. By 1877, southern states were once again controlled mainly by elite whites. The gains that African Americans had briefly made in voting and holding elected office were undermined, often by the violence of groups such as the KKK. Poor whites and blacks alike suffered under tenant farming and sharecropping. Any hope for equality disappeared as efforts to create separate spaces for the races began to emerge. In Georgia, cotton remained the most important crop even though it was hard for a middle-class farmer, much less a sharecropper, to make a decent living. Which evidence does the writer include to support the idea that Reconstruction was a failure? Check all that apply.
the rise of segregation
the problems of sharecropping
the loss of elite white leadership
the creation of the Ku Klux Klan
the undermining of African Americans’ suffrage
the failure of cotton as a major crop
