Suppose that you were one of the other delegates present at the Second Virginia Convention. Write a 300-word speech you might give in response to Patrick Henry, either to support or refute his argument about preparing for war with the British. Use textual evidence to evaluate how effectively Henry conveyed his point of view and achieved his purpose. Your speech, like Henry’s, should convey a clear point of view; support that point of view with details and examples; make logical as well as emotional appeals; and use rhetorical techniques such as figurative language, allusions, and rhetorical questions to convey your perspective and support your purpose of either supporting or refuting Henry’s argument. Perhaps you might even coin a line worthy of going down in the history books alongside Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death!”
