Most of central Australia is a hot desert although the northern part of central Australia is hotter all year round with hot dry summer and hot dry winters. Southern central Australia will have cool winters.  The largest city in central Australia is Alice Springs and most of the other sparsely populated areas are comprised of indigenous communities. These communities are remote and lack a lot of basic services. There are still 250 distinct language groups spread throughout Australia so communities can be highly independent and different from one another. Most of these communities in central Austalia subsist on pastoral activities and traditionally aboriginal people had a reciprocal relationship with the land and practiced hunting and gathering. Today one of the largest economic activities is mining on Aboriginal land and 80 percent of the region's income derived from mining.  This comes into tension with Aboriginal land rights and there are increasing regulations in place to find ways to protect aboriginal rights vis-a-vis the mining companies.
