The 1960 presidential election featured the first televised
debate between the major party nominees. While
Democratic candidate John F. Kennedy appeared tan and
healthy, Republican Richard Nixon wore a suit that didn't fit
and refused to put on makeup. Most radio listeners
thought Nixon performed better, but television viewers
preferred Kennedy, who ended up winning the election.
