Why was it difficult for the British military to keep the rebellious American colonies under control?

There are 2 big reasons why they were hard to be kept under control. The first reason would be that America is so far from Britain, meaning that if the king wanted to fight them or stop them, he would have to ship troops via ocean which took a long time. Reason 2 is that the Americans became fond of their new land and new it much better than the British, so when the British came to stop them the Americans instantly had the upper hand.
