In 1778, Britain decided to turn its attention to the South. British leaders planned to take Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. They thought they had more support in the South and would therefore be more successful. In South Carolina, there were as many Loyalists as Patriots, and the two sides clashed almost every day.

The Patriots did not have many militiamen in the South, which worked to the advantage of the British. Within a year, the British Army had gained control of Georgia. It was now focused on the port city of Charleston, South Carolina. This became known as the Siege of Charleston, the worst loss the Americans experienced in the entire war.
