What was the "corrupt bargain” of 1824? Jackson campaigned with Adams to ensure Clay was not elected. Clay supported Adams as president and Clay became secretary of state. Adams supported the Democrats and they gained more seats in Congress. The electoral college elected Jackson as president and let him name his vice president.
