After the trade route became famous they called it the silk road for the silk that comes through trade. once the silk became seriously famous for the area, they made a water trade route because so many people wanted their silk. Silk wasn't the only thing to come through trade. riches did often come through there like bronze or gold,  which meant the needed to gather in groups to form safety down the silk road.
