Have you ever tried to convince people to agree with you? Has anyone ever tried to convince you to see their side? Thoughtful argument backed up by evidence can convince a person to change his or her mind!

Task:

You have been assigned to write an editorial for the school paper. Your job is to make arguments backed by evidence. You may choose to argue in support of one of these claims:

Claim #1: Asia made more contributions to society than Africa.

Claim #2: Africa made more contributions to society than Asia.

Process:

Step #1: Review the information that you gathered in your S. P.R. I.T. E. Chart. Based on the gathered information, choose either Claim #1 or Claim #2 to use when writing your editorial.

Step #2: Now that you have chosen the claim you will argue in support of, take a few minutes to review Level One of the Argument Writing Tutorial. This will prepare you to write your arguments.

Step #3: Congratulations on completing the tutorial. You should now know all of the parts that are needed to write your argument. It is now time to begin writing. You will use the Argument Writing Template to record and complete your work. You will be turning in your completed Argument Writing Template for grading to your instructor. Remember, your job is to convince your audience to agree with your claim. As you are writing, you may want to review the Argument Writing Tutorial to make sure you have included all of the important elements of argument writing.

Good luck and have fun!

As bob is driving on an exit off the freeway, he comes to a stop light and sees a homeless man asking people for spare change. “see, he’s a perfect example of why we shouldn’t be giving welfare benefits to the homeless,” bob mutters to his wife. “he’s too lazy to get a job, but he’s healthy enough to beg people for their hard-earned money all day long.” what are the sample and the target in bob’s argument? are there any inductive fallacies present in bob’s reasoning (bias, hastiness, appeal to anecdotal evidence, self-selection)? if so, explain why. if not, explain why not.
