Kim Sin-rak was born for great things. Born in Korea in 1924, Sin-rak soon found himself in Japan training to become a sumo wrestler. During his training, he was given the name Rikidozan, and would go on to become one of the biggest pop culture icons of post-WWII Japan. Rikidozan was a budding sumo star, but could never beat the best. He soon switched to pro wrestling, which he helped to introduce to Japan in the early 1950s. Japan needed a hero to cheer after the events of WWII, so Rikidozan worked with the best American wrestlers of the time to make the country feel pride in itself again. Rikidozan became the most popular television personality, and still holds the record for two of the most watched television programs in Japanese history. Wrestling was seen as a very serious athletic performance and competition thanks to Rikidozan. He founded the first pro wrestling company in Japan in 1953 and toured the world to sharpen his skills. His legacy continues to flourish in modern Japan, where wrestling is still a popular pastime. 4
