A cenote is a natural sinkhole filled with freshwater. The word cenote is derived from the Mayan word D'zonot, which means "sacred well." Cenotes are formed when bedrock collapses into fresh groundwater. More specifically, a cenote is created when the surrounding bedrock destabilizes, and it collapses to reveal a cave underneath. Different types of cenotes exist. Some are shallow and wide, others are partially open with part of the water's surface hidden, and some are deep, water-filled shafts. Cenotes are an exceptionally exciting place for divers due to the interior formations inside of them.
Mexico is filled with over 3,000 cenotes, and a large majority of them can be found in an area near the Chicxulub crater. The Yucatan Peninsula is an area that is sparsely filled with rivers and lakes, and cenotes are a source of water for the area. In ancient times, Mayan settlements were built next to cenotes in order to provide a water source for their habitations. It can be said that cenotes were vital to the quality of life for ancient Mayan's. The Mayan's also believed that cenotes had a mythical significance.
Despite the geological importance of cenotes, they are great sights to explore. Cenotes can be found throughout many of Mexico's tourist destinations, but they also exist in other parts of the world. Cenotes have become popular excursions for travelers, explorers, and adventurer's alike when they tour Mexico.
