As an anthropologist you have to take special care not to impose your values on the people you're observing. At the same time, you're not expected to be entirely impartial and there is the understanding that human needs are more important than anthropological data. The question is where is the line? What is our ethical responsibility? There are cases where anthropologists have tried to help an endangered culture fight for its survival. These don't always end well. Then there are cases, like female genital mutilation or the use of child soldiers, where organizations are trying to eliminate certain behaviors. And in some cases, you have nations imposing their will on other nations. This is sometimes referred to as regime change. Do we have the right to change other cultures? How do we decide what's acceptable and what's not? Relating all of this to the article, how does Scheper-Hughes explain the actions of the mothers? What role do local officials and priests play? How did this situation come to exist?
