The Siege of Boston, which took place between April 19, 1775 and March 17, 1776, was an event that occurred within the early stages of the War of Independence, when the New England militia sieged the British-occupied city of Boston for nearly a year. The situation finally ended in March 1776, when the British army was forced to leave Boston under enemy gunfire. Already during the siege, many residents left the city and replaced the loyalists living in the Boston area. Although the British ruled the harbor, their service vessels were subjected to the continued harassment of American hijackers, and important freight was delayed.

During the siege, the militia forces formed by the colonists turned into the Continental Army, led by George Washington.
