How did world war 1 cause the federal government to change its relationship with the business world?

The main way in which World War I caused the federal government to change its relationship with the business world is that it led them to play a more active role in companies that were manufacturing goods, to make sure that enough war materials were being made to ensure that the US could remain in the war.
