What does a system of check and balances protect against?

Protects against one branch of government becoming to overpowerd

It protects against one branch of the government overpowering another. For example if the Executive branch nominates someone to be a justice the Senate has to approve. Another example wold be if the Judicial branch makes a ruling the president can actually free them of their consequence.
