Why did marcus garvey call for black people to build their own business

Garvey wanted black people to be proud of themselves, and he instilled in them the motto "Be black, buy black, and think black and else will take care of itself!". He was inspired by other black leaders that thought that the way to equality was through entrepreneurship which would lead black people to self-sufficiency and relevance in society.
