Mongolia´s main economic activity are agriculture and livestock, and also big mineral reserves like copper, coal and gold. The Soviets provided financial assistance to Mongolia, and at one point this assistance represented more than one third of Mongolia´s GDP. Unfortunately, with the collapse of the Soviet Union almost over night, Mongolia went into a deep recession. This is one of the main reasons why Mongolia´s economic growth has been weaker than China and Taiwan.

At the same time, there are other reasons like the fact that Mongolia is landlocked territory, meaning that the country does not have access to the ocean, while Taiwan and china do thus, facilitating sea trade for these countries with other commercial partners.

Furthermore, the country has seen its shares of natural disasters specially in 1996, as well as the decrease in international prices of its main mineral products. All of of these reasons have negatively played a role in Mongolia´s economic development when compared to Taiwan and China.
