The Ring of Fire is an area of tectonic activity. It surrounds the Pacific Ocean and runs along the west coast of Latin America. Large numbers of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in this zone. In 2010, a major earthquake struck the coast of Chile. The earthquake resulted in massive damage to infrastructure.
