At this point, Carl is probably in the alarm stage of the general adaptation syndrome. There are three stages of general adaptation syndrome (GAS). Th first stage is alarm, the body reacts with "fight or flight" resistance and the nervous system is preparing the body to respond the danger. The second stage is resistance, where the body tries to resist while the nervous system is trying to return the body to normal but remains alert. The last stage is exhaustion, it happens when the body can no longer continue being stressed of the situation at hand, the body is then immune to diseases or death.
