Why did southern plantation owners support slavery? Slaves owned small parcels of land. Without them, the plantations would not be large enough to grow crops.
It cost less to buy slaves than to hire workers.
Owners did most of the work on plantations.
Slaves did a better job harvesting cotton, sugar cane, and tobacco than anyone else.
