As legend would have it, Rome was founded by the twin sons of Mars, the god of war. Their names were Romulus and Remus. The boys were placed in a basket on the Tiber River by a warrior king, who intended for them to drown. They were rescued, however, by a she-wolf, who raised them to be strong warriors. Upon learning the story of their birth, the twins fought with, and defeated, the king who tried to kill them as infants. They founded their own city on the river's banks in 753 B. C. Unfortunately, the twins did not always get along. Romulus killed his brother and became the first king of Rome, which is named for him. The twin boys were raised by a she-wolf
