Joel was spending a quiet evening alone reading his favorite book. Suddenly someone burst into the room and shouted his name. His knees became weak, his heart began to pound, and his face flushed red. Joel quickly realized he was happy because the person before him was his brother whom he had not seen in over a year. The next day, Joel encountered another unexpected person. Again his knees became weak, his heart rate increased, and his face flushed. This time he felt afraid, because he was facing a robber holding a gun. These two situations experienced my our hero illustrates the theory of emotion.

The Schachter-Singer Theory

This theory uses both the James-Lange theory and the Cannon-Bard theory of emotion. Like the James-Lange theory, the Schachter-Singer theory states that people do infer emotions based on physiological responses. That is, the critical factor is usually the case or situation on ground while the cognitive interpretation is what individuals use to label that emotion.

When compared to the Cannon-Bard theory, the Schachter-Singer theory also state that similar physiological responses can produce different emotions. For example, if you experience a racing heart and sweating palms during an important english exam, you may also identify the emotion as anxiety. If you experience the same physical responses on a date with your significant person, you might interpret those responses as love, affection, or arousal.
