The founder of modern Nepal was Prithvi Narayanan Shah, the Rajput King of Gorkha, a state Sixty-five kilometers (forty miles) west of Kathmandu. After 'ascending the throne', Prithvi Narayan Shah brought in plans for 'unifying Nepal under his rule'.  

He first organized his troops again according to methods of British military of that time, and then managed to control over the 'northern and Southern trade routes' which leads to the Nepal Valley. He later conquered many such places and 'protected his empire' from the 'Mughals and the British'.
