Classical Conditioning A breastfeeding mother leaks breastmilk in Target when she hears a baby cry 2 isles over. This is an example of Classical Conditioning because there is a conditioned stimulus (baby crying), unconditioned stimulus (feeding a baby), conditioned response (dispensing breast milk) and an unconditioned response (dispensing breast milk). The response is INVOLUNTARY. In fact, this is a good example of stimulus generalization!
Operant Conditioning
Seven-year-old Patrick is struggling with OCD. As part of his treatment, he can earn stickers on a chart when he wears an "uncomfortable" shirt for 2 minutes. This is an example of Operant conditioning because Patrick is learning to repeat behaviors with positive outcomes (positive reinforcement). It involves the organism (Patrick) making a choice. He is learning the connection between his behavior and a consequence.
Social Learning
Amit likes to wear her baseball cap backward because her older cousin wears his baseball cap backward. This is an example of social learning because there is a model (the older cousin). Amit is imitating the behavior of the model. She is paying attention to a model, retaining the model's behavior in memory, and re-creating what the model does.
