Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) court case restricted the rights of African Americans. That court case ruled that "separate but equal" facilities were constitutional. That meant there were separate public facilities for whites and African Americans. The "white" facilities were very nice and clean, while the "colored" facilities were horrible. They were the absolute bare minimum. (this applied to schools, bathrooms, water fountains etc.)
