Robert sternberg's identifies three components--intimacy, passion, and commitment--that shift in emphasis as romantic relatonships develop.

This is the triangular theory of love. This concept holds that each of these three components of a romantic relationship have differing levels, and each takes on a different importance as the relationship ages. Early in the relationship, passion and intimacy can be at the fore, while commitment develops as the relationship matures and becomes more permanent.
