What is the difference between a conquistador and a caudillo?

The Spanish and the English both desired the colonization or obtaining foreign lands for similar reasons. They both desired gold and silver in order to help their countries wealth. In addition, the wide of variety of different plants was very appealing for medicine and different types of food.

The Spanish explorers took a more forceful method of gaining land. The Spanish Conquistadors made this apparent by killing thousands of natives in order to take gold, silver, and other resources while claiming their land in the name of Spain. A great example of this is Tenochtitlan of the Aztec empire being devastated by Hernan Cortes. The Aztecs did not the same quality of weapons and were weakened by disease spread by foreigners coming into their country. The Spanish Conquistador took the capital with ease.

On the other hand the English took a different approach. Within their first colony of Roanoke the English appeared to have no major problems with the natives of the land. There was no use of force against the natives which made the English seem more trustworthy. They were able to settle easily but were not well prepared which eventually led to their downfall. Jamestown was another example of this. Jamestown was created without using force to take over natives. However, John Smith and his legendary writings of Pocahontas displayed the Native Americans as being subservient to the English and willing to help them do any simple task.

In the Jamestown colony without the help of the Natives all of the English settlers would have died. Trade was established between the English and Natives as well as information on how to make appropriate shelter, hunt, and gather. While the Spanish appeared to be well prepared in their explorations or conquering, the British took a less forceful approach and used the natives to their advantage
