Erving Goffman has introduced the concept of Dramaturgy in sociology the idea is similar to Shakespeare’s play “As You Like It” in which he has written that this world is a stage and we all are actors who are enacting our roles. An individual learns his role through the process of socialization.

ERVING GOFFMAN’S DRAMATURGICAL APPROACH

According to Goffman, most of individual’s interaction in the society is similar to theatre performances. Goffman has given concept of front stage, back stage and impression management. He says the world or society is the front stage where we act in front of the audience where relations are formal and an individual keeps in mind about his impression on the other people that he refers as audience. While, the back stage is that where audience is not present and interactions are not formal or less formal.

Goffman has also talked about props, in society, an individual’s props are his words or speech which he uses to make an impression on others and these props can be verbal as well as non-verbal.
